In a letter to parents, Watertown High School Principal Daniel Carroll said that the video was brought to the administration’s attention at the end of the school day on Tuesday, March 19, “with concern that the comments came from and was filmed by Watertown High School students.”
Carroll said that the district immediately launched an investigation into the video at the time it was reported and “will apply all appropriate disciplinary policies for those individuals who are responsible.”
“Please know that the discriminatory language used in this video is contrary to the beliefs and values we uphold at Watertown High School and Watertown Public Schools,” the district said in a statement. “Counselors and school psychologists will be immediately available for students affected or impacted by this video.”
The details of the alleged racist video have not been disclosed by school officials or investigators. Carroll said that he’s spoken with the Capital Region Education Council and will be contacting the Anti-Defamation League to assist the school in the implementation of educational programs regarding “respect, appreciation and acceptance of differences.”
“Moving forward, Watertown High School will use this unfortunate incident as an opportunity to reinforce our position regarding equity, respect and acceptance of all individuals in our school and community,” Carroll said. “We will continue to work together with our faculty, staff, students and community to ensure that Watertown High School is a safe and welcoming place for all who enter our building.”
